• PAINTER
• One of the few female artists of her time to gain international recognition
• Born Magdalena Frida Carmen Kahlo, she contracted polio as a child, but was still able to play some sports, including boxing
• A bus accident when she was 18 years old left her bed-ridden in a full body cast for three months, although she was able to paint because of a special easel her mother commissioned for her
• Kahlo never fully recovered from the accident, and the pain that she endured for the remainder of her life is a recurring theme in her paintings
• Despite having no formal art training, she was hired to teach at an art school in Mexico City
• Became famous for her surrealist self-portraits, bold color choice, and use of Mexican folk imagery
• At a time when doing so could mean the end of her career, Kahlo was openly bisexual, having rumored relationships with such celebrities as Josephine Baker, Chavela Vargas, and Georgia O'Keeffe
• Her paintings also often feature her various pets, which included birds, monkeys, and dogs
