• FIRST American woman in space and the FIRST known LGBT astronaut
• In 1977, she and five others became the FIRST women ever accepted into the NASA astronaut candidate program
• Gracefully dealt with stupid questions from the media, such as whether she cried during training, and if she wore a bra in space
• Appointed by President Ronald Reagan to investigate the 1986 Challenger explosion
• Spearheaded the reshaping of NASA's mission goals, advocating for its technology to be used to increase our understanding of not just space, but Earth as well
• Taught at the University of California, San Diego after retiring from NASA
• Founded Sally Ride Science, which focuses on engaging girls in science
