• ICHTHYOLOGIST
• Worked tirelessly to dismantle the stereotype of sharks as mindless savage beasts, earning the nickname THE SHARK LADY
• Born to an American father, who died when she was two years old, and a Japanese mother
• When Clark was nine, her mother would bring her to the aquarium every Saturday morning
• Her graduate application to Columbia University was denied because the department chair worried she'd get married and drop out
• Earned her doctorate in Zoology from New York University
• Led more than 200 research trips around the world, discovered three new species of fish, and wrote more than 175 articles
• Studied fish in their natural habitats, rather than killing them and bringing them back to a lab for examination, which was the standard practice
• The FIRST to study shark behavior in a laboratory setting, she DISPROVED the belief that sharks were untrainable by teaching lemon sharks to perform numerous tasks
• Never attacked by any of the animals she studied, which included giant squid and man-eating barracuda
• Has four fish species named after her
• Founding director of the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory (now the Mote Marine Laboratory) in Florida, which began as a one-room aquarium and grew into a multi-campus research center
• Taught for almost 25 years at the University of Maryland
• Traveled the globe promoting ocean and wildlife conservation
• Completed 72 deepwater submersible dives, including on her 87th and 88th birthdays
• Close friend of oceanographer Sylvia Earle
