Decoded many messages, including a planned ambush of British ships, which enabled Britain to cripple the Italian Navy
Broke the previously unbreakable Abwehr Enigma cipher, ensuring the success of the D-Day invasion
Later became an author and avid conservationist of historic gardens, serving as secretary and then president of the Garden History Society
