• NOVELIST & ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST
• After graduating from Wellesley College, she started writing short stories and fiction, as well as working at the Miami Herald where her father was the editor
• When she learned of the Florida governor's plan to drain the Everglades and build an airport, she wrote The Everglades: River of Grass
• The book raised awareness of the critical role the river and its surroundings play in the state's ecosystem
• Founded Friends of the Everglades, a conservation group that still exists today
• Her book and her activism helped establish the EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK
• Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993
• Also worked as a nurse for the Red Cross in Europe during World War I
