• MOUNTAIN CLIMBER
• FIRST woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest
• At ten years old she went on her first mountain climbing expedition on Mount Nasu, and continued climbing through college
• Started the FIRST Ladies Climbing Club in Japan in 1969, bringing them to Nepal and the top of 24,787 ft. high Annapurna III in 1970 (less than a decade after Mohan Koli, the first mountaineer to ever reach the summit)
  
• Despite considerable pressure from those around her to be a housewife, she acquired support from local organizations to sponsor her climb up Mount Everest
  
• In 1975, she led a team of 14 female climbers to the top of Everest, facing dangerous conditions and even getting caught in an avalanche
  
• In 1992, at 53 years old, she became the FIRST woman to reach the highest point on every continent, an achievement known as climbing the Seven Summits
  
• Toured the globe for many years speaking about her experiences, as well as urging greater conservation of wild places
