• PLAYWRIGHT, NOVELIST, & DIRECTOR
• Studied medicine at the University of Cambridge but didn't finish her degree, returning to her home country shortly before it became independent
• Started writing plays while studying psychology
• Often explores issues of oppression and identity in her work, particularly as it relates to race and gender
• Her debut novel, Nervous Conditions (1988), was the FIRST ever written by a Black Zimbabwean woman to be published in English
• Nervous Conditions won the African division of the Commonwealth Writers Prize, was listed as one of the BBC's '100 Stories That Shaped The World', and is now a stalwart component of colonial, gender, and feminist studies throughout the English-speaking world
• The 1992 film Neria is based on one of her stories, and became the HIGHEST-GROSSING Zimbabwean film of all time
• After studying film at the Deutsche Film-und Fernsehakademie in Berlin, she became the FIRST Black woman from Zimbabwe to direct a feature film with her 1996 movie Everyone's Child (which she also cowrote)
• Founded her own production company, Nyerai Films, as well as the International Images Film Festival For Women, and the Institute of Creative Arts for Progress in Africa
• Actively campaigns against government corruption and abuse, and has been arrested for participating in protests
